The Pillow Book
2016

The Pillow Book
2016
Single-channel video, Color, 6min36sec
‘The Pillow Book’ is a product of cross-over work, collaboration with contemporary dancer WEI Qin and Xiaoyun, which attempts to present something in between image, poem, sound and theater; a collaboration with contemporary dancer WEI Qin and Xiaoyun, who improvised the dancing scenes in the video. Drawing excerpts from the Japanese essay collection “The Pillow Book”, I used everyday objects in forming an abstract space, which resonate my reading experience of the book: mundane, minimal and poetic. I would arrange the set using ready-mades found on the street and garbage dumps – shredded glass, tires and etc. Dancers are then invited to interact with the set freely, whose performance would later be interpreted and edited - drawing elements from text and sound samples – into the end product.
